Set you mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
– Colossians 3:2
Where do we go to find happiness and peace in our daily lives? More to the point, why do we all too often seek the treasures of this fallen world over the everlasting joys of God and our eternal home? The devil tempt us with worldly comforts. Money, honor and earthly possessions are in our grasp. We have them with us now. We don’t yet realize the full measure or value of what God is offering to us. We are too familiar with the comforts of the world. “Swine trample on pearls, because they do not know their value.” (Swinnock)
The beauty and value of worldly treasures dims, as we look more and more toward heaven. We are warned in 1 John 2:15-17 “not to love the things of the world or the things in the world… the world is passing away with its desires,…”
The things of this world are not eternal. They can only comfort us for so long. Therefore we must as it says in Colossians 3, “Set [our] mind on things that are above.” Things that are above, are eternal and of infinitely more value that things on the earth.
Keeping our minds on these and uniting our lives with God in Christ brings the joy of the promise in Col 3:4, ” When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
