Whether we are talking about Luther or if we look at David – or anywhere else you look at true repentance, it always points us to the reality that Repentance equals unrelenting dependence on God – a life of it! The very thing that Laodicea lacked. They thought they had need of nothing. So Jesus rebukes them in LOVE. Yes, that is right, in LOVE. True LOVE has teeth. We are apt to presume upon Christ’s love and assume it excludes discipline – and that lets in evil leaven, lending strength to flesh. The amazing truth that Jesus declares to them in v.19 is that without discipline you cannot know love!
