In Chapter 20 we saw how Jonathan outshined David in covenant faith and faithfulness. Now in 21 we continue to see David fearful and fleeing. This was the man whom the Spirit rushed upon and did not depart. A man anointed as the king after Gods own heart. And, lest we forget, a man who defeated the greatest physical enemy of Israel and easily doubled the bride price for Michael, bringing back 200 Philistine foreskins! – of all men, we want David to be deserving of grace… but he is not. “While we were yet sinners” applies to all. And this is what makes this text so important. God shows his favor and his presence to the undeserving, and reminds us of the true need that we have for a savior that is the LORD and yet can sympathize with us in our weakness! And of course the testimony of all Scripture and Davids life is that the Lord is a Loving and compassionate Savior you can trust in.
